A new 21 MW hydropower plant and associated transmission lines are planned for construction in Disko Bay, south of Qasigiannguit.
The project includes the installation of three turbines and the construction of a transfer tunnel over 6 km long, connecting two natural mountain lakes in the area. From the hydropower plant, one transmission line will lead to a transformer station near Qasigiannguit, and another line will connect to a transformer station in Aasiaat.
A thorough environmental impact assessment of the project has been carried out, including of the Naternaq Ramsar site, through which the second transmission line will pass, to ensure minimal impact.
The hydropower plant will have a capacity of 21 MW and will supply electricity and heat to households in Aasiaat and Qasigiannguit. The planned hydropower plant will contribute to a significant reduction in fossil fuel use in the electricity and heating supply of the two towns, which today rely primarily on diesel and oil.
In 2025, preliminary studies were carried out in the project area as part of the preparations for a new hydropower plant that will supply green energy to both Aasiaat and Qasigiannguit. The studies included rock drilling, water depth measurements, and seismic surveys. In addition, public meetings were held in connection with the public hearing of Environmental Impact Assessment, during the summer of 2025: Link to the Government consultation.
