NunaGreen Construction Nuuk A/S has taken the first concrete step toward the expansion of the hydroelectric power plant in Utoqqarmiut Kangerluarsunnguat (Buksefjorden). At the tender held on April 4, bids were received from three local contractors. The best offer came from GREENLAND NATIONAL CONTRACTORS ApS (GNC), who will carry out the task of upgrading and extending the existing access road to the upcoming project site.

The project, tendered as a main contract, includes the upgrade of 14 km of existing road and an option to extend it by approximately 8 km. Work will begin in the upcoming construction season and will generate activity in Greenland’s construction and civil engineering sector already this year. Inuplan A/S has been appointed as the client’s advisor and will oversee the project.

“We are very pleased that a local contractor will carry out this important task. It demonstrates that the green transition creates local value, and at the same time, it is a major milestone to begin the actual work,” says Aviaaja Karlshøj Knudsen, CEO of NunaGreen A/S.

The road is a prerequisite for the main project – the expansion of the Buksefjorden hydropower plant – which includes a new power station, tunnel, and transmission line. The tender process for this design and build contract is already underway. Three international consortia have been pre-qualified and are currently working on submitting their bids. The main project is expected to commence in 2026.

“It is encouraging that, in parallel with the major tender process, we can begin the roadwork. This means we can make optimal use of the next construction season and build momentum for the project,” concludes Aviaaja Karlshøj Knudsen.
