The tender process for the expansion of the hydropower plant in Utoqqarmiut Kangerluarsunnguat (Buksefjorden) is well underway. NunaGreen Construction Nuuk A/S has now completed the prequalification process for the turnkey contract, and three contractor consortia have qualified to submit bids for the execution of the project.

The project includes the construction of a 16 km tunnel, a new power station with three turbines, and a 36 km transmission line connecting the new hydropower plant to the existing facility. With this expansion, capacity will nearly triple—from 45 MW to 121 MW—ensuring Nuuk’s supply of renewable energy for decades to come.

The prequalified contractor teams advancing in the tender process are:

  • JV COBRA – MTH BUKSEFJORDEN HPP (Spain/Denmark)
  • Pennecon Aecon Partnership (Canada)
  • Association between Thyssen Schachtbau GmbH and Alberto Couto Alves, S.A. (Germany/Portugal)

The project is tendered as a turnkey contract through a Best and Final Offer (BAFO) process, where the prequalified contractors will have the opportunity to optimize their final bids through a competitive negotiation phase. Construction is expected to begin in 2026, with the new hydropower plant scheduled for commissioning in 2032.

In March 2025, an additional tender will be released for preparatory terrain works. This contract will be offered as a main contract aimed at local actors and includes upgrading 14 km of existing roads, with an option for an additional 8 km of construction roads.

“NunaGreen A/S is very excited about the strong interest in the project and looks forward to a successful tender process that will hopefully result in competitive bids within budget,” says Aviaaja Karlshøj Knudsen, CEO of NunaGreen A/S.
